The months have just been flying by! Now that the studio is open, renovation on the rest of the house is in full swing which is why I am getting the newsletter out a week late. I was going to write an article about anatomy this month until I heard on the radio yesterday that Christmas is 11 weeks away.

Are you Ready for the Holidays?
I don’t mean is the shopping done and the presents wrapped. What I mean is do you have a handle on your ability to cope with the demanding and hectic season. Those of you in my classes know I talk about sthira sukham (steadiness and ease) in almost every class I teach. Heck, I even have the sanskrit letters tattooed on my body – no lie! Why is it so important to me?
Let me tell you a little background about my life when I found yoga, I was in a marriage that was deteriorating, in a job I hated, and felt like I just had to keep it all together at all costs. I was living unfulfilled. More than that I was experiencing debilitating migraines, chronic back pain, and panic attacks. Full fledged stop everything panic attacks. I could not function without being medicated. But I truly felt that at all costs I was to keep my family together and keep everything looking perfect on the outside. In the midst of all of this the acupuncturist I was seeing for my back pain had been suggesting I take yoga. I finally did after a year of her talking to me about it. Because of my pain I took a restorative class. In that first class I had a place to really see inside of myself for the first time perhaps ever. I had space to cry the tears I didn’t know I needed to cry. The rest of my story ended up in a divorce and completion of my first yoga teacher training program the details of which are for a different post. What I want to get at is it was the steadiness and the ease that I got from my practice to carry me with grace through the divorce and then into leaving a ten year career into starting my own business. If yoga has the power to do that, just think how the holidays this year can be different for you than last year. The ability to be completely present and grounded during the family gathering. Focused and strong on Black Friday. The time to start is now, don’t wait until you are already caught up in the chaos and trying to fulfill everyone’s expectations while sacrificing your personal wellness. How will your life be different when you begin 2013 with steadiness and ease rather than with anxiety and stress related illness?
